An after-work activity in Wrocław – from zero, no partner

Don't dance? Already dance? Perfect either way

Movement after a long day, music – sometimes played live – and people worth meeting. Solo or as a couple, in central Wrocław – see below what it looks like.

Below, short videos from our dance floors – unstaged, this is simply what it looks like:

Movement, music, people – an after-work reset

Hardly anyone finds us by searching for a dance course. More often we're looking for movement after a day at a desk, an adult hobby that isn't another screen, or a way to meet someone in Wrocław from outside work. Swing – the most enjoyable after-work activity we know – brings all three together.

Movement that isn't a workout

At the gym you count sets, at squash you count points – here you count nothing, because the rhythm carries you by itself.

Live music instead of a playlist

You take headphones to your run – here the music is sometimes a live human with a trumpet. Live sets come from Wrocław's own Jazz Dreamers.

People instead of headphones

You can leave a gym without exchanging a word with anyone – here we rotate partners, so you'll dance with most of the group on your very first evening.

What the first time looks like

You start the way most of our students do – with a from-scratch course. Signing up takes a few minutes.

A from-scratch course

You sign up online in a few minutes – solo or as a couple. Bring comfortable clothes and flat shoes, nothing more. The whole group starts together, from zero: rhythm, the first basic step, leading and following. And if you come as a couple, rotation works in your favour: you both meet people, so you quickly know the whole group – not just the dancers of the opposite role. Classes run in three studios in central Wrocław, so they slot easily into an evening after work.

From-scratch courses

Already dance other styles – salsa, bachata, tango, ballroom? Starting from scratch would bore you: you already have rhythm, partner work and an ear for the music. Jump straight to the “Początkujący” (beginner) level – there we teach swing vocabulary, not dancing itself.

Beginner courses

Pick your style

We teach four swing dances – all to the same live-and-kicking music. Click a style to filter the courses below, or simply read what makes each one different.

Lindy Hop

The king of swing dances, born in 1930s Harlem, New York. Danced in couples – on a swinging pulse, with plenty of freedom and room to improvise. Tempo: from mellow grooves to fast, joyful tunes. The most popular way to start – it's where most of us began.

Show courses: Lindy Hop

Authentic Solo Jazz

Solo dancing to swing-era jazz – the steps danced in Harlem before anyone called them choreography. You dance without a partner, entirely on your own terms; it builds rhythm, coordination and confidence that pay off in couple dancing too. Tempo: from slow numbers to fast ones. Ideal if you'd rather start on your own.

Show courses: Authentic Solo Jazz

Charleston

The icon of the 1920s – those unmistakable kicks and a springy pulse. Danced solo and in couples, usually to faster music; lots of energy and joy. For people who like to properly let loose – and a natural next step for lindy hoppers, since the two dances overlap a lot.

Show courses: Charleston

Collegiate Shag

A fast, bouncy couple dance for up-tempo tunes. The basic is simple, so the fun comes quickly – and it looks spectacular. It's a great place to start your swing journey, no dance background needed. Perfect if you're in good shape, love high tempos and want a proper workout.

Show courses: Collegiate Shag

From-scratch courses

Starting from zero. Step by step we teach the basic steps, rhythm, and leading and following, in a friendly atmosphere. No partner or experience needed.

Beginner courses

Already have your first steps behind you – or do you dance other styles? Build technique, musicality, and leading and following at the next level – still in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. Dancers coming from other styles (salsa, bachata, tango, ballroom…) usually start right here – from scratch would be too slow for you.

Start with an event

Intro workshops and open socials – the easiest way to take your first steps on the dance floor, with no full-course sign-up. Look out for socials marked "Free entry" – you walk in for free, no sign-up needed.

"I have two left feet" – and other thoughts we know by heart

Almost everyone who dances freely at our socials today started with one of these thoughts. Let's take them apart – like a friend who already goes and tells you how it really is.

"I have two left feet"

Swing doesn't start with figures – it starts with walking in rhythm to the music, and you know how to walk. On a from-scratch course the first classes are pulse, a simple step and listening to the melody; we only add new elements once the previous ones truly sit.

"I don't have a partner"

You don't need one – most people come solo. We rotate partners in class, so you get to know the whole group quickly, and we keep the balance of leaders and followers even, so nobody is left standing at the wall.

"Everyone will be better than me"

On a from-scratch course – they won't. That group exists precisely so that everyone starts on the same day, from the same step. The only "better" people in the room are the teachers – and they, too, once stood at their own first class not knowing what to do with their hands.

"It's too late to start"

Our dancers span a wide range of ages and there's no upper limit. On the dance floor what counts is the joy of moving, not performance. The worst moment to start is "someday" – the best one is the next social.

"I know nothing about jazz – I don't even listen to it"

That's fine – we hope you'll fall in love with the music along the way. We care about more than your dancing: you'll learn the history of this wonderful dance and its music, soak up the atmosphere of New York's Harlem, and meet the legends – Frankie Manning, Norma Miller, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Al Minns and Leon James – the great Black artists who created what, in time, through dancing and learning, we hope you'll love too.

Still got a "but"? Have a look at the FAQ below – or, if you'd rather see for yourself, come to a free-entry social. Seriously, it's fine to come and just watch.

What happens if I miss a class?

  1. 1

    You report the absence

Go to your client panel and let us know you won't make it to the class.

  2. 2

    You get a DanceCoin

A DanceCoin lands in your account – you'll find it in the panel under “Your DanceCoins”.

  3. 3

    You make the class up

Use the DanceCoin to book another class from the “Sessions to make up” list in your panel.

Which classes you can make up depends on the course's make-up policy – for most it is “the same or a lower level”. The panel only ever shows the dates you can actually book.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most often from people before their first class. Don't see yours? Drop us a line – we're happy to help.

Common questions

I'll come alone and I won't know anyone. Won't it be awkward?

That's the most common scenario – most people come to us for the first time on their own. In class we switch partners every few minutes, so the group gets to know each other naturally during the very first lesson – you don't need to know anyone or make small talk. At a social you can start by watching: nobody drags anyone onto the floor, and when you feel like dancing, you simply ask – that's completely normal here, including between strangers.

How much does it cost to try?

You can start for 0 zł – socials marked "Free entry" are free and need no sign-up. You don't need any gear or a special outfit either, so there are no entry costs like with skiing or climbing. When you decide on a from-scratch course, you'll see the price and dates with the specific group – you sign up and pay online.

What's the difference between the “Od podstaw” (from scratch) and “Początkujący” (beginner) levels?

“Od podstaw” (from scratch) is for people who have never danced swing – we start from zero: rhythm, the first basic step, and leading and following. “Początkujący” (beginner) is the next step for people who already know the basics (e.g. after a from-scratch course or a short intro) – we develop the basic step, add new moves and work on flow and musicality. In short: “od podstaw” is your very first contact with swing, while “początkujący” builds on the foundation you already have. If you already dance other styles, go straight for the beginner level – a from-scratch course would be too slow for you. Not sure which to pick? Message us – we'll help you choose.

Do I need a partner?

No. You can come to classes and socials on your own – we rotate partners, so you dance with different people and get to know the whole group quickly. That said, if you have your own partner it's easier to get a spot – we keep the Lead / Follow balance even, so everyone dances comfortably, without sitting out.

What are Lead and Follow, and which role should I choose?

The Lead offers the movement and sets the direction; the Follow interprets and responds to it – it's a dialogue, not a command. The role has nothing to do with gender: pick the one that intrigues you, and over time you can try both. Not sure where to start? Message us or ask at class – we'll help you choose.

If I have my own partner, can I stick with them and not dance with others?

Swing is a social dance – we learn it precisely in order to dance with many people, and switching partners noticeably speeds up your progress. Something that isn't clicking with your own partner can suddenly fall into place with someone else – and on the next round with your own partner it'll go just as smoothly. That said, if you sign up with your own partner and prefer to dance only together, that's absolutely fine. From experience, though, people who rotate make faster progress – so we warmly encourage it.

Sign-up details

Do I need to sign up in advance?

For courses, yes – spots are limited, so you sign up online. For socials you usually don't, just show up. Workshops and events sometimes need a ticket; details are always shown with each event.

A pass or a single entry – how do I pay?

It depends on the class or event. You buy courses as a whole, and where available you can use a single-class entry (drop-in). All pricing and entry details are always in the card of the given course or event.

Can I sign up for more than one class?

Yes! The more classes and practice you get, the more people you meet and the faster you progress – and the more courses you pick, the less you pay for each additional one: the second course is 10% off, the third 30%, the fourth 40% and the fifth 50%. The discount is applied automatically when you sign up.

Class details

What happens if I can't make a class?

Nothing is lost – you report an absence with one click in the student panel, at the latest before the class starts. In return you can make it up: pick a date of any group at the same or a lower level and simply join their class. That way you stay in the learning rhythm and your class doesn't go to waste. Not sure which group to pick? Message us – we'll help you choose.

Where are the classes, and how do I get there?

The venue address is shown with each course and event – you’ll find the details in the card of the given course or event. We dance at a few locations close to Wrocław’s city centre, so before class check which one your course is at.

What should I wear, and what shoes?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, and flat shoes with a smooth sole so you can pivot. You don't need any special outfit.

What music do we dance to?

Swing-era jazz! The music of legendary greats – Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Hodges, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday and many, many more. The world of swing music is incredibly rich. We also love today's bands – led by our friends, Wrocław's own Jazz Dreamers, the best Polish band playing danceable jazz/swing – plus many other active swing bands, including Shirt Tail Stompers, Heart of Dixie, Reverent Juke, Hot Swing Sextet and Le Dancing Pepa Swing Band. We support artists and buy their records – and we dream of a social danced to our own vinyl collection, spun live on a turntable.

Dance and fitness experience

I have no sense of rhythm – does that rule me out?

No, because rhythm can be learned – it's a skill, not a talent. On a from-scratch course we start precisely with the pulse of the music: first you hear it, then you walk to it, and only then do we add steps. Swing-era jazz helps a lot here – its rhythm is clear and carries you by itself.

Do I need any dance experience?

Not at all. Our from-scratch courses start from zero – we teach rhythm, the basic steps, and leading and following, step by step, in a friendly atmosphere.

Do I need to be a professional dancer?

Absolutely not. Most people here start from zero and nobody's judging. Our from-scratch courses are designed exactly for people with no dance background at all.

What if I've already danced other styles?

Great news: you don't need to start from scratch. If you dance salsa, bachata, tango, ballroom or another style, rhythm and partner work are nothing new to you – jump straight to the “Początkujący” (beginner) level, where we teach swing vocabulary rather than dancing from zero. Not sure it's the right level? Message us or come to a social – we'll help you pick a group.

I sit at a computer all day. Is dancing enough exercise?

Two hours of swing is a solid dose of movement – your legs and whole body work, and you set the intensity as you go: you can dance calmly or hard enough to need a change of shirt. The biggest difference from the gym is in your head, though – instead of counting reps you listen to music and talk to people, so the tiredness comes as a by-product, not as an obligation.

Is there an age limit, and do I need to be fit?

There's no upper age limit – our dancers span a wide range of ages. You don't need to be athletic either. From-scratch classes start at a calmer tempo, and as your experience grows we gradually teach you to dance to faster and faster music.

Beyond the classes

I've just moved to Wrocław. Is this a good way to meet people?

One of the best we know. A course gives you a steady weekly rhythm and the same faces every week – and rotating partners means you genuinely get to know them, not just pass them by. Socials add people from every group and school, of all ages and from all walks of life.

Can I just come to a social without signing up for a course?

Yes! Socials marked "Free entry" are open to everyone. It's the easiest way to meet us and take your first steps on the dance floor. Bigger events with live music are usually paid and require advance registration or a ticket.

Is swing for me?

If you enjoy music and people – yes. Our dancers are all ages and backgrounds; what unites us is an open, friendly community. And if you'd rather find out in practice – some courses let you drop in for a single class first and see for yourself on the dance floor. Details are in each course's card.
